College Won’t Parent Your Child

It’s tempting to think that the often exorbitant college tuition you are paying affords you “concierge service” that will fully take care of your child…

But there is no one at college that you will be handing your child off to.

College won’t parent your child.

That’s still your responsibility and their potential success and well being is dependent on you helping them develop life skills before they set foot on campus.

You can start by helping them figure out ways to get themselves places on time, helping them manage unstructured time, helping them learn to self-advocate, helping them prioritize their health, safety and well-being, helping them learn to do laundry, helping them build community etc.

These are all skills that you should be working on with them from now till you drop them off in the fall.

Otherwise, you’re counting on their peers to parent them.

That feels like a roll of the dice.

Have you met most 18 year olds?

And on a good day would you entrust them with your child’s well being and their academic success?

The summer is a great time to work on these skills with your kid before they head to college. Not sure where to start?
